Introduction to Disk Operating System (DOS)
To get any work done by the computer, we have to give complete and correct orders. These commands should be in a language that the computer can understand. The computer really only understands the language of the operating system. The operating system itself is the supervisor or manager of the computer. That’s why we give our orders to the operating system in short words in our own language, which it converts into the language of the computer and sends it to it. If there is no operating system between us and the computer, then we will not be able to get any work done from the computer.
Disk Operating System (DOS)
Disk Operating System (DOS) was the first operating system first used by IBM company for personal computers. It was originally available in two versions that were identical, but made available under two different names. PC-DOS was the version developed by IBM and MS-DOS was provided by Microsoft. The computer works only under the control of its operating system. Disk Operating System (DOS) is a computer operating system that can access disk storage devices such as floppy disks, hard disk drives. Disk Operating System is used for file storage and file management in computer system, control of computer system and hardware devices.
IBM The operating system created for personal computers was called the Personal Computer-Disk Operating System or PC-DOS. Microsoft later named it Microsoft-Disk Operating System or MS-DOS.
Importance of DOS
The Disk Operating System (DOS) uses a command line interface (CLI), which allows users to type commands. By typing simple commands such as copy and cd (change directory), users could browse files on the hard drive, open files, and run programs. Disk Operating System (DOS) commands are easy and simple to type. But the commands of this operating system are difficult to use for new learners, that is why Microsoft later added Disk Operating System (DOS) to the graphic based Windows operating system.
Disk Operating System (DOS) is used to operate a system or computer. It is a set of computer programs whose main functions are managing disk files, allocating system resources as per requirement. Disk Operating System (DOS) provides the necessary features to control hardware devices such as keyboard, screen, disk devices, printers, modems and programs.
Disk Operating System (DOS) is the medium through which users and external devices connected to the system communicate with the computer system. DOS translates the commands issued by the user into the language understood by the computer and instructs the computer to work accordingly. It also translates the results and any error messages into a user understandable form.
