Windows Basic Operations

Desktop Background

  • The first screen that appears when the computer starts is called desktop.
  • We can set the photo of our choice on this screen. This picture, color or photo is called desktop background.
  • To change the desktop background, right click on the empty space on the screen and click on Desktop Background in the opened dialog box or menu.
  • Browse and select the photo of your choice.
  • Right click on the image and click on Set as Wallpaper in the opened option.

Start → Control Panel → Personalization → Background → Choose Your Picture

 

Screen Saver

  • Whenever we leave the computer empty, a picture or photo text is seen rotating on its screen, this is called screen saver.

Start → Setting → personalization → Lock Screen → Select Screen Saver Setting

 

Desktop theme

  • This is a customized graphical user interface, which can change the computer’s ordinary sound, icons, pointer, wallpaper, or screen saver according to your choice.

Start → Setting → Personalization → Themes → Change Theme → Choose Theme

 

Setting Date and Time

You can either set the time and date automatically via the internet or manually adjust them. To adjust manually, turn off “Set time automatically” and then click “Change” under “Date and time”. Choose the correct date and time and click “Change” again. You can also change the time zone under “Time zone” using the dropdown menu.

File

  • This is an object in which the computer saves data, information, settings or instructions created with a program. The extension of that file is made according to the application in which the file is being created.
    • aruncomputer.txt → Created in notepad,
    • aruncomputer.doc → Created in MS Word
    • arun.xls → Created in MS Excel
    • arun.jpg → Image File

 

Folder

  • This is a special type of file in which other files and folders can be kept.
  • Folder is an object which can contain many documents.
  • Information is organized using folders.
  • Folder is located inside another folder or directory.

 

Creating a new folder
  • Browse to the place where you want to create a folder inside a drive, directory or folder.
  • Right click with the mouse on the empty space.
  • Click on New Folder from the opened drop down menu.
  • A new folder will be created and the cursor will move down to its icon. Type the name of the folder here.

 

Deleting a file or folder
  • Browse to the file or folder you want to delete.
  • Right click on the folder or file.
  • Click on the delete button from the drop down menu that opens.
  • Click on Ok/yes in the Conformation Window. — > Or
  • Select the file folder and press the delete button from the keyboard.
  • Click on Yes/Ok.

Right click on Folder → Press Delete Button on Drop Down Menu → Ok / Yes

 

Moving and Copying a File or Folder
  • Cut/Paste is used to move a file or folder from one place to another.
  • If you copy and paste it at another place, the file will remain at both places.
  • On cutting and pasting, the file will be moved from the previous place and pasted at the new place.
  • Right click on the file or folder that you want to move and select the Cut/Copy option.
  • Right click on the place where you want to move the file or folder and select the Paste option from the drop down menu.

 

Renaming the Folder
  • Right click on the file or folder.
  • Click on the Rename option from the drop down menu.
  • The cursor will start blinking on the name of the file or folder.
  • Erase the old name and type the new name.

Right click on Folder → Press Rename Button on Dropdown menu → Type New Name

 

Creating a Short Cut

  • Right click on the file for which you want to make a Short Cut.
  • Click on the Send to desktop option from the drop down menu.

 

Recycle Bin

  • This is a special type of folder in our operating system. The file or folder deleted by us goes to the Recycle Bin.
  • If required in future, the deleted file can be restored from the Recycle Bin.
  • The file or folder can be permanently deleted by going inside the Recycle Bin. With the ‘Empty Recycle Bin’ option, all the files present in the Recycle Bin are deleted simultaneously.
